Water powered truck

I was getting an intermittent  “water in fuel” message in the truck and had a check engine light on so I headed to Mobile on Saturday morning to try to get it looked at.  I went to the GMC service center and got there right as they opened.  Thankfully they were able to get me right in.

Check engine light was a bad glow plug #5 and was totally unrelated to the “water in fuel” message.  They did not have glow plugs in stock so they just cleared the code for now.  They recommended changing the fuel filter and once they took it off they found a small crack in the WIF (water in fuel) sensor that connects underneath the filter so they recommended installing a new WIF sensor as well.  They found some rust particles in the filter so they think I picked up some bad diesel somewhere along the way.  It wasn’t a lot so the WIF sensor was just barely registering water which led to the intermittent behavior.  The sketchiest fuel we got was in Fort Davis…could it have been from that long ago?  I don’t know.  Luckily I was near empty on fuel anyway so we’ll just be careful to stick to high traffic fuel stations like truck stops.  They said I should change my fuel filter more often that normal for the next couple of times.

I looked into changing the fuel filter myself.  The most tedious part seems to be removing the inner wheel well lining.  There is an aftermarket door you can install to make it easier to change.  Or you can do like the previous owner and just cut a hole so you can reach in and change it!

An update on my bad experience at the GMC service center in New Orleans.  On a prompt from my sis I wrote a review on google about my experience.  The general manager responded within a day and also called me.  It took a few calls back and forth before we were able to talk…but he was very embarrassed by what happened and was extremely sorry.  Apparently the tech had been disciplined.  He did correct me that they had put 5 gallons of DEF in and it was $23 per 2.5 gallons…so I think I either heard wrong or the service manager said it wrong.  Anyway, that was my mistake.  So, they are 2X more expensive than retail shops not 5X like I originally believed.  Anyway, hats off to him for following up and apologizing.
