Palm Sunday on Geiger Key

On our drive down to Key West we could tell Brielle wasn’t feeling too great and this morning she was worse.  She had a fever and it was Sunday so doctor options were limited.  We doped her up with Tylenol to try to get through the day.  Despite the fever she was very excited because our friends Bill and Karen Miller (who we visited in Mobile) were in Key West on holiday along with some other church friends, Hollis and Rae.  They were all going out to Geiger Key to stroll on Boca Chica beach and so we decided to tag along.  We followed them as they rode their scooters and when the road ran out we hopped on our bikes and rode until even the trail petered out.

This place seemed to be where the locals hang out to avoid the busy beaches of Key West.  As we strolled we saw lots of sand crabs, hermit crabs, snails, sponges and other sea things.  Karen is like a cross between a kid and the crocodile hunter.  She was so excited by all the creatures and she could spot things that I’d otherwise pass by.  Then she’d pick the thing up to show the kids or let them hold.

There was this driftwood hut out on the beach that legend says was lived in and built by some dude using only things he found that washed up on the beach.  It was pretty cool in a funky, Boulder sort of way.  Lots of random things strapped on to or dangling from the wood.  Bottles, cans, bottle openers, shoes, corks, bags, scarfs, nets, buoys, scooters….yeah, there is a beat up old motor scooter out there.  While the group walked on further Brielle and I stayed at the hut because she was tired and the shade of the hut made her feel better.  As we sat there I imagined living at that spot…and on a day like this it wouldn’t be too shabby a place to live!

After our stroll we all went to Babalus for lunch.  The kids are always pretty psyched when we eat out because its pretty rare for us to do.  They sat at their own table while the 6 adults shared another table.  It was fun hanging out and talking with our friends….part of our church family.

After lunch the 5 Wachs went to the yacht club to use the pool.  Leo’s campground, where we’re staying, has an agreement with the yacht club so campers can use the facilities.  Its a nice area with a marina, beach area and a nice pool.  The cool water felt great and if Brielle was still feeling crappy, the pool at least made her forget her pain for awhile.  That girl LOVES to swim.  We swam until the wind started picking up and JUST as we got in the truck it was like a water faucet turned on….it was a deluge!

By the time we got home (about 10 minutes) it was just barely sprinkling.  We hit the showers and then the boys and I played a game of Lords of Scotland.  This is a really clever (and cheap) card game that I usually win.  However, both boys beat me this time with Caden eeking out a win over Dacen….but it was close.  Caden is the new trophy holder!

I could try to give you some excuse why we did not go to church today but any I came up with would probably be lame.  It is Palm Sunday Huckster, you should have gone to church!  Hopefully God will forgive me.
