{"id":784,"date":"2016-02-24T18:27:05","date_gmt":"2016-02-24T18:27:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thewachs.com\/wachsacrossamerica\/?p=784"},"modified":"2016-03-06T02:02:38","modified_gmt":"2016-03-06T02:02:38","slug":"holy-wholly-holey-roof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thewachs.com\/wachsacrossamerica\/2016\/02\/24\/holy-wholly-holey-roof\/","title":{"rendered":"Holy, wholly, holey roof"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We had heard great things about St. Andrews State Park from the Bareneckers. \u00a0They did have a little <a href=\"http:\/\/bareneckers.com\/the-panama-city-beach-freakout\">weather scare<\/a> while they were there\u00a0but surely that would not happen to us&#8230;.right?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/Eqv2Pw\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1598\/25218817456_e8a8b97517_z.jpg\" alt=\"Zoiks!!\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>We were having dinner together after a beautiful day in the park when my folks text me to ask if we&#8217;re ok. \u00a0Apparently there was severe weather ripping through the Gulf from Louisiana to the Florida panhandle. \u00a0I told them we&#8217;d keep an eye on the storm but it looked fine outside to me. \u00a0The wind picked up a little bit later and some sprinkles but nothing much. \u00a0Then at 11:20 our phones start buzzing with tornado warnings (not watches, <strong>warnings<\/strong>). \u00a0We pull\u00a0up\u00a0the weather radar and it looks like it&#8217;s about past us so I think we&#8217;re in the clear but Steph wants to be on the safe side. \u00a0We wake up the kids, put ponchos on and make our way to the cinder block bath house where other campers have come for shelter as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/EsPKa8\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1638\/25245101525_a79be49fa4_z.jpg\" alt=\"Taking shelter in the outhouse\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>About 12:30am the warning drops to a watch so we head back to the trailer and find a puddle of water on the kitchen floor. \u00a0I poke around and can tell it&#8217;s coming from behind the fridge. \u00a0This is the first real weather we&#8217;ve seen on the trip. \u00a0Literally Oh-dark-thirty in the morning during a severe thunderstorm is not when I want to find out I have a Hawaiian roof (leaky leaky). \u00a0Fortunately the rain had seemed to stop so we\u00a0prayed\u00a0for no more rain. \u00a0I go to crawl in bed and wonder if I had wet the bed from the weather alert&#8230;there was a wet spot on my side of the bed. \u00a0It turned out not to be a\u00a0bladder leak\u00a0but rather a\u00a0leak at the crank for the TV antenna. \u00a0Crud!! \u00a0I wrap a rag around it to try to soak up any more drips and I head to the couch to sleep the rest of the night.<\/p>\n<p>There was no more rain the rest of the night, thank you God, and my first order of business in the morning was to inspect the roof. \u00a0All night I played it through in my head what I might find when I&#8217;m up there and how I will find the tiny gap where water is infiltrating. \u00a0But once on the roof my search for the culprit\u00a0is very quick. \u00a0There is a giant hole above the fridge!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/Ehnvx7\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1640\/25126817832_5178593dff_z.jpg\" alt=\"Fridge roof vent cover did not exist\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the vent for the refrigerator&#8230;so its supposed to be there, but what is supposed to keep water out of it? \u00a0I can tell that something had been screwed to the flange at one time so I google around and\u00a0find what <em>should<\/em> be covering the hole. \u00a0I purchase one at a local shop and get it installed along with sealing up the boot where the TV cable goes through the roof (there was a gaping hole).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/EsPK8e\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1717\/25245101415_813ddba382_z.jpg\" alt=\"New fridge roof vent cover installed\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I got some Eternabond tape and Dicor sealant that I&#8217;ll use to do some preventative maintenance on the roof when its less windy but we should be good to go for awhile.<\/p>\n<p>I have no idea when we lost the fridge vent cover. \u00a0I looked back at the picture of the top of the camper from the ferry in Galveston and the vent cover was gone there too (it&#8217;s on the shady party of the roof).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/DS7bYs\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1703\/24852232802_35d1150e53_z.jpg\" alt=\"Kids looking down on Ava&#039;s roof\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Maybe we lost it in <a href=\"http:\/\/thewachs.com\/wachsacrossamerica\/2016\/01\/30\/some-more-a-caverns-at-sonora-caverns\/\">Sonora <\/a>when we got waaaay too close to the trees?
