{"id":1764,"date":"2016-05-27T18:06:10","date_gmt":"2016-05-27T18:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thewachs.com\/wachsacrossamerica\/?p=1764"},"modified":"2016-06-04T12:32:31","modified_gmt":"2016-06-04T12:32:31","slug":"surgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thewachs.com\/wachsacrossamerica\/2016\/05\/27\/surgery\/","title":{"rendered":"Surgery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ava has been limping along with her one good leg and a temporary stump leg after her <a href=\"http:\/\/thewachs.com\/wachsacrossamerica\/2016\/05\/20\/ava-breaks-a-leg\/\">right leg broke<\/a>. \u00a0It has actually worked out fine but takes more time. \u00a0Her replacement leg arrived at the UPS store near our campground at Wompatuk State Park and we <a href=\"http:\/\/thewachs.com\/wachsacrossamerica\/2016\/05\/26\/freedom-trail\/\">barely arrived<\/a> in time to pick it up before they closed.<\/p>\n<p>The part came with zero instructions so all I had to study was the video from loveyourrv.com. \u00a0The confusing part was how the motor attaches to the leg.<br \/>\n<a title=\"New leg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/136797225@N05\/26756769813\/in\/album-72157666213242613\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c6.staticflickr.com\/8\/7063\/26756769813_689049cc0a_n.jpg\" alt=\"New leg\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I decided I&#8217;d just have to dig in to figure it out as I go. \u00a0To do the work I needed the weight off the landing gear and so the Beast would be tasked with holding up Ava during the surgery. \u00a0We were heading to Steph&#8217;s aunt and uncle&#8217;s house to hopefully driveway surf so I figured that would be a good time to do the work; right after arrival at their house. \u00a0This way we could use their house while Ava was in the OR.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived and I actually impressed myself backing into their 100 yard long driveway and placing the rig in its resting spot with only a minor adjustment at the end.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>First task was to empty the compartment so I&#8217;d have space to work in there. \u00a0Next I took off the connecting rod between the 2 legs. \u00a0And then the motor. \u00a0I thought it should just pull off but it would come off a bit and then stop. \u00a0After many tries I did what the loveyourrv fella did and pushed out the pin in the beveled\u00a0gear and that released the motor along with the drive shaft of the old leg.<br \/>\n <a title=\"Removing hardware\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/136797225@N05\/27265692532\/in\/album-72157666213242613\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c5.staticflickr.com\/8\/7100\/27265692532_519d27557b_n.jpg\" alt=\"Removing hardware\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The new leg came with its own drive shaft so I needed to pull the old drive shaft out of the motor. \u00a0The old shaft was boogeredup which was keeping the shaft from sliding out of the motor. \u00a0I did not have a file but our hosts did! \u00a0I filed down the high spots and used a little whos-yer-daddy with the hammer to get it out.<br \/>\n<a title=\"Cramped work space\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/136797225@N05\/27329985406\/in\/album-72157666213242613\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c7.staticflickr.com\/8\/7390\/27329985406_8c23d606d6_n.jpg\" alt=\"Cramped work space\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I took the foot off the old leg and and was able to complete the amputation with the removal of just a couple bolts. \u00a0Then the new leg slipped right in, motor slid on the shaft ok and the connecting rod hooked up without issue. \u00a0A quick hand crank test passed as well as a motor test. \u00a0I reattach the foot and then realize the holes for the lower leg extension are on the wrong side.
